Governors

Welcome to our Governors page

It is a legal requirement for all schools to have a Governing Body and ours is made up of representatives from Parents, Staff, the Local Authority and the Community.  They have a full range of skills so that they are able to challenge and support the work of the school as necessary.  All of our Governors fulfil their role and give of their time on a voluntary basis and work very hard on behalf of our school.

There are several types of Governor making up the governing body as follows:-

LA Governor - A person appointed as a governor by the Local Authority and known as a Local Authority Governor.

Co-opted Governor - A person appointed by the Governing Body who they consider to be committed to the good government and success of the school.  This person may or may not live or work in the community served by the school.

Parent Governor - A parent elected by other parents of children at a school to serve on the Governing Body.

Staff Governor - A teacher /or person working at the school who is elected as a governor by people who are paid to work at the school.

Clerk to the Governing Body - A person appointed to carry out administrative duties for the Governing Body such as preparing an agenda, minuting meetings and dealing with correspondence.  The clerk advises the governing body on legal and procedural matters.

Governors are not expected to get involved in the day to day running of the school; Mrs Taylor, our Headteacher, is responsible for the internal organisation and management.  Governors do, however, review the aims of the school and ensure that they are upheld.  They therefore work closely with Mrs Taylor and the staff to develop the strategies necessary to achieve the required raising of standards for the school and monitor progress.  They also form and review clear policies, which set out how the school should be run.

The school Governing Body holds a full meeting each term.  There are also several committees in place, all of which again, meet once a term.  The following is a short synopsis of what each committee does:-

Pastoral Committee

This Committee looks after all matters related to the social well-being of the pupils.

Pupil Progress and Curriculum Committee

This Committee monitors and evaluates the progress of the pupils in the school.

Premises Committee

This Committee deals with all matters concerning the school premises.

Personnel Committee

This Committee deals with all aspects of the staffing of the school.

Finance Committee

This Committee considers the budget allocated to the school and assists in monitoring it throughout the year.

Mrs Jennifer Taylor  - Headteacher

I have worked at Farnborough Road Infant School for the last 20 years being a Senior Leader the last 13 years.  It was a great privilege to become the Headteacher of this fabulous school last year and I am extremely proud of its outstanding status. Early Years education is something very dear to my heart as I believe the first years in school shape a child's attitude to learning for the rest of their lives.

I was born, bought up and educated locally and continue to live with my family near to school. I live with my husband, daughter and dog and enjoy walking, reading and spending time with family and friends.

I am keen to get to know all our parents and joining them in supporting their child on their learning journey.

Please do not hesitate in contacting me with any ideas or queries.

I am a Registered Osteopath based in Southport and have been practising since 1996.  I see many patients with musculoskeletal injuries and specialise in babies and children with birth strains.  In my spare time (when I have any!), I enjoy DIY, going to the gym and to gigs.  I have two children at the school;  both joining the school in Nursery.  This has led me to want to be involved with the running of the school.

I am currently on the Pastoral Committee, as I like to be aware of how the school includes every child of every ability and am also interested in general welfare - as schools are involved in many issues other than education.  I am also involved with pupil progress, as we have high standards and it is good to monitor pupil progress individually and as a school.  Recently, I have been appointed SEN Governor, for which I am undergoing some training and am making regular visits into school to see how all pupils' education is addressed and managed.

As a Governor, I see our role as supporting the staff, school, pupils and parents to the best of our ability and I believe we have a strong team in school!  As the school is such a community hub, with the Children's Centre and other links, I will always have a strong interest in Farnborough Road, as I believe community links should be encouraged and nurtured.  In my first year as a Governor I have learned so much.  The school always has decisions to make - sometimes quite tough, but the balance of a varied Governing and Teaching body, makes those decisions the right ones.

Nigel Ball

I live in Birkdale with my wife Donna and our two daughters, Grace and Imogen.

I was born and brought up in Southport, living in the local area most of my life.  For over 20 years I worked in the hospitality trade as manager of our family business, The Shelbourne Hotel.  I later managed the conversion of the hotel into apartments.  I now run a building and property maintenance company in the local area.  As an officer in Merseyside Army Cadet Force for over 20 years, I enjoyed working with young adults and being a small part of their progress and development.  I reluctantly retired due to work and family commitments in 2007.  I was therefore delighted to be appointed Governor in 2013 as I genuinely enjoy having the opportunity to be involved in the running of our wonderful school, and to be able to once again give something back to the community.  As the father of two young girls, the quality of our local schools is of prime importance and I enjoy being able to use my experience to help benefit our school.

My interests include politics, cycling, home improvements,  real ales and cricket (just watching these days!)

As I am at the school each morning, I hope to get to know more of you. I am always happy to stop and say hello and take note of your comments and suggestions.

I am a secondary school teacher of Science with wider responsibilities for Leading the Science Department in a school outside of Sefton.  I moved to Southport four years ago with my wife Davina and two children Niamh and Ciara.  Niamh is moving up to Year 3 at Farnborough Road Junior School, while Ciara is about to start reception at Farnborough Road infant School.  I have been really impressed by the care, support and challenge that Niamh has been afforded in her time at FRIS.  As a Governor I hope to help in any way I can to ensure that parents receive the same standard of care and support that we have as a family. Outside of school life I like to spend time with my family and go walking in the hills and like to read science fiction.

Amanda Cook

I am a full time Mum to three wonderful children, Erin 8 and George 5, who are currently attending Farnborough Road Schools.

I grew up in St. Helens and only recently moved to Southport to be nearer to my Husband’s family.  Our Children started at Farnborough Road in September 2015, and we are overjoyed with how well they’ve settled in and how welcome we’ve been made to feel.

Before taking a career break to be with my children, I worked at The Royal Liverpool Hospital.  I joined the NHS after finishing university and spent several years as a Multi-Disciplinary Team Co-Ordinator, working closely with the haematological team.  I first became a school Governor in 2012 and was elected as Parent Governor at FRIS in December 2015.  I have a particular interest in the curriculum, SEN, Health & Safety and Healthy Eating in schools.

I hope to be the parent’s voice on the Governing body, and to support and encourage the school in the future.

Paul Duffy - Vice Chair of Governors

Both of my daughters spent their infant and junior school education at Farnborough Road.

Although my profession is in the education sector, working with Farnborough Road Infant School is starkly different from my day job as a Deputy Headteacher within a large secondary school outside of Sefton.

I have been a school governor for over 20 years in one capacity or another, in several schools and view my time at Farnborough Road as the most enjoyable.  I became a governor to be involved with children and the local community and to offer my skills and experiences to help the school.

I am immensely proud to be associated with FRIS.  The staff are extremely committed to ensure that all children flourish during their time here, in a very happy and safe environment.

I live in Southport with my wife and young son James, who attends Farnborough Road Infants School.  I have worked within the Civil Service for the past 10 years in a variety of roles.  My current role is within project governance.

I am passionate about ensuring all children receive a positive, enriching education which allows them to fulfil their potential in an encouraging environment.

I enjoy travel and lived abroad for two years in Paris - an experience that allowed me to gain a love of food and a few kilos!  When not working, I enjoy gardening, watching football and spending time with my son, who keeps me busy!

Lucy Fletcher

I am a Senior Solicitor in the medical negligence department of a large solicitors practice in Southport and manage a team of six.  I am very fortunate to work for a family friendly employer and have worked part-time since having my children.

My children attended Farnborough Road Infant school.  I also attended Farnborough Road Infant School and then the Junior School myself.  Since my son started school, I wanted to get involved in school life. I became a parent governor in November 2014 and last year was a member of the Finance and Premises Committees. This year I am a member of the Finance and Pupil Progress & Curriculum Committees.

I am also the Chair of the School PTA and spend a lot of time in and around school in this role, raising much needed money to support the children and the school.

I live in Birkdale with my wife Helen and my two children Tilly and Sonny.  My eldest attended the Infant School and is now in the Junior School and my youngest is in Year 1.  I have held several roles within the Public and Private sector over the last 20 years and my latest role is leading a Charity owned consultancy which is focused on improving the quality of services within the public sector.  I am passionate about what I do and am a keen advocate of getting people who use our public services involved in designing them and getting them involved in running them.  When I am not working, I'm either doing DIY, buying power tools or out with the kids.

David Pullin

I moved to Southport from Wigan over 12 years ago to live with my now wife Julie.  I currently work in Southport for Fletchers Solicitors as a Systems Analyst.  Over the years working in IT has given me the opportunity to be involved in various sectors such as Pharmaceutical, Retail, Finance and now Legal. Before working in IT I trained in Social Care.   In my spare time I enjoy cycling and following the ups and downs of Wigan Athletic Football Club.

I have always been an active member of the community and currently involved in local politics.  In the past I have volunteered for various organisations including Age Concern and NACRO.

It is important to me that all schools provide the very best for our children and being a governor is my way helping us all to achieve this.  We are very lucky in Southport that we have a number of good and outstanding schools with excellent teachers and staff but we must always be vigilant and remember that we should always put the children first.

Simon Shaw

I have been a Governor of Farnborough Road Infant School (and also of the Junior School) for over thirty years.  My wife Lyn, was a Teaching Assistant in the school for more than fifteen years until she retired in 2014.  Our four children attended both schools through the 1990s and our eldest son, Sam, is completing his PGCE in 2015/16 to qualify as a primary teacher.

I am a Chartered Accountant, which may explain why the other governors seem happy for me to continue as Chair of the Finance Committee!  Having lived in Birkdale for most of my life, I am currently one of the elected councillors for the area.
