Spring Term 2010- Mrs Taylor's class- Room 5

This Term our topic is Houses and Homes.
We have started by looking at different types of houses and learning their names: Detached, Semi-Detached, Terrace, Cottage, Flats etc. We have drawn, painted and labelled our houses and written our own non-fiction booklet describing different houses.

In Numeracy we are learning to identify the place value of numbers eg 15 has 1 ten and 5 units etc. and identifying 1 more and 1 less, 10 more and 10 less using number lines and a hundred square. We have been practising addition and subtraction using a number line and using the counting on method- putting the largest number in our heads and counting on.

For the first 2 weeks our focus was design and technology and our geography theme- investigating our locality. We have looked at houses, churches, shops and other business and other features around our school and  learnt our own address. We designed our own houses and in literacy written a set of instructions to make our house.

During Arts week our topic was 'Buildings and Machines' taken using the Building of our new canteen as the stimulus. throughout the year we have watched the progress of the building and watched the variety of huge machines that have nelped to build it. We have been very busy drawing, printing and doing collaborative pictures of machines and houses and making our houses from our design. We also visited St. John's Church to look and learn about the building inside and out. Then had lots of fun back at school designing and making our own stain glass windows.  We have also been to visit our Buddies in the Nursery.

Now we are into the second half of the Spring term we are beginning to work more like a Key Stage One classroom getting ready for the transition to Year 2. The focus for this half term is how houses looked in the past, particularly during the Victorian times. We have thoroughly enjoyed our 2 Victorian days in school; washing the clothes, baking bread and taking part in a Victorian classroom. We had a great time at Quarry Bank Mill. Have fun looking at our photos!
