PSHE Curriculum
At Farnborough Road Infant School we are Growth Mindset champions! We want all our children to love PSHE. We want them to have no limits to what their ambitions are and grow up wanting to be teachers, psychologists, social workers, mental health psychologists, doctors and nurses.
We want all our children to have the best start to life and to learn and apply the skills needed to be responsible adults. We want everyone to feel safe to take risks and to know that making mistakes is part of the journey of learning. Our vision is that our children grow up to be resilient, empathetic individuals who can keep themselves safe and who want to, and are ready, to make a difference.
Curriculum Intent
Our PSHE curriculum promotes our school values and ethos. From a young age, we want our children to make the right choices, be sensitive to the needs of others, be respectful and be polite. The FRIS PSHE curriculum not only meets National Curriculum and RSE requirements, but will provide memorable PSHE lessons that will develop their personal, social and emotional learning and prepare them for the next stage in their education and give them valuable life skills.
We have 4 consistent Golden Rules from our Caterpillars to Year 2- To be kind and gentle- To try your best- To listen carefully and To be honest. All staff use this script when talking and teaching our young children about the importance of good behaviour. Our 5 School Values- Compassion, Perseverance, Honesty, Love and Kindness and Respect underpin everything we do and teach to ensure our children grow up to be outstanding, productive citizens of our school, local community and our world.
Curriculum Implementation
The PSHE curriculum has carefully planned learning opportunities which ensure in each year group there is a progression of skills, vocabulary, understanding, and knowledge. The My Happy Mind programme supports and enhances this learning by providing a structured framework for developing emotional resilience and mental wellbeing. Through its focus on positive mental health and knowledge of how our brains work, the programme encourages children to recognise and manage their own emotions, build self-confidence, and develop a growth mindset. By integrating these core elements into the PSHE curriculum, My Happy Mind helps students not only to understand themselves better but also to apply their emotional skills in real-life situations, therefore enriching their personal, social, and academic development.
The No Outsiders programme supports PSHE in Reception to Year 2 by providing age-appropriate lessons and stories that help children understand diversity, equality, inclusion and respect for others. It supports the development of children’s social, emotional and personal skills by encouraging discussions about similarities and differences, family diversity, friendships, feelings, and treating everyone fairly. The programme promotes British Values, particularly individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance, while helping children recognise and challenge discrimination in an age-appropriate way. Through stories, discussions and practical activities, No Outsiders complements the PSHE curriculum by creating a safe, inclusive environment where children develop empathy, confidence, positive relationships and an understanding that everyone belongs, regardless of their differences.
We are proud of our commitment to developing children’s Personal, Social and Emotional skills. Our whole-school Buddy Class system provides valuable opportunities for children to build positive relationships, develop empathy and demonstrate kindness and care towards others as they partner with a younger class. Buddy classes meet half-termly to strengthen these relationships and take part in shared activities. Children also enjoy our Friday MASH-up playtimes, where they have the opportunity to play with their buddies, siblings and friends from across different year groups, fostering a strong sense of belonging and community throughout the school.
We nurture children’s compassion and sense of social responsibility by encouraging them to support a range of charitable causes. Each year, our School Council selects the charity to benefit from our half-termly Toast Café donations and works collaboratively with other Southport Learning Partnership School Councils to support local and worldwide initiatives, including Children in Need, Time for Bed and YPAS. We also provide opportunities for children to make a positive contribution to our local community, such as the Little Voices choir singing at Queenscourt Hospice and Birkdale Park Nursing Home, and Year 1 and Year 2 participating in St John’s Christmas Tree Festival. Many of these activities take place outside the school day, demonstrating our children’s genuine commitment to helping others and making a difference in their community.
Our assemblies also commit to developing our PSED/ PSHE skills and our understanding of worldwide topical issues and British Values. We celebrate and recognise our children's achievements by celebrating our Friends of the Week and Stars of the Week.
Our whole school Growth Mindset ethos permeates throughout our school, and you can often hear our children saying 'You can't do it YET! or Never give up !'
Curriculum Impact
We are committed to ensuring that every child reaches their full potential in PSHE, developing the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to thrive in the next stage of their education and inspiring them to aim high and explore a wide range of future career opportunities.
